Weathervanes tend to be treated as roof hardware, but the figure on top does a fair amount of work at ground level too, setting a tone for a yard the same way a gate or a stone wall does. That also makes it a practical choice at smaller sizes. Color is where the decision gets more complicated than most buyers expect. The bird is known for being red, but the traditional weathervane metal is copper, and copper does not stay red. It moves from a bright penny finish through brown and eventually to green patina, usually over five to twenty years, depending on climate and rainfall.
That progression is attractive on its own terms, and it is what many people are actually after, but it does not preserve the association that made the figure appealing in the first place. Cardinal imagery is easy to overdo, and a yard that pairs the vane with matching feeders, garden flags, stepping stones, and mailbox decals stops reading as design and starts reading as a collection. The stronger approach tends to echo the color rather than the subject, with plantings that already carry red into the landscape, such as winterberry, red twig dogwood, or a maple that turns in October.
None of this makes a cardinal weathervane a difficult choice, but it does explain why two of them can land so differently in similar yards. One that is sized to the structure beneath it, finished in a way that matches how the owner wants it to age, and placed where it either crowns a roofline or closes a view will hold up as a design decision for as long as the building stands. One chosen on the strength of the bird alone, without much thought to scale, finish, or position, usually ends up as an object nobody looks at twice.
