Southern Colorado Garage Door has published a garage door repair guide on its website that explains the six problems behind most of its repair requests and how each one is handled. The company, in business since 1994 and run by owner Tom Godec, released the guide as part of its rebuilt website.
"Most repair jobs start the same way. The door quit, or it's making a noise it never used to make, and the homeowner wants to know what they're dealing with," said Tom Godec, owner of Southern Colorado Garage Door. "I wanted the common problems laid out in plain English so people can read how I handle each one before I ever pull into the driveway."
The guide is organized around six categories of work, covering broken torsion springs, opener failures, doors that have come off their tracks, worn cables and rollers, damaged panels and sections, and yearly tune-ups. The company says those six problems cover most of the repair requests it receives. Each entry describes what an owner is likely to notice and what the fix involves. For a broken spring, that means replacing it and getting the door balanced again. For a door off its track, it means setting it back in place and finding what knocked it loose.
Two entries deal with decisions that tend to come up during a repair visit. The panel and section entry explains that a single damaged section can sometimes be replaced without replacing the whole door, depending on the make and model of the original door and whether its design and color can be closely matched. The opener entry notes that most opener brands can be repaired, and that when a unit has reached the end of its life, the owner is told so and shown what a replacement involves.
"If a door can be fixed, I'll say so. If it's worn out, I'll say that too and explain why, and then the homeowner decides," Godec said.
A separate section covers doors that are stuck in place, advises against forcing them, and notes that the company responds to urgent repair requests.
"The worst thing to do with a stuck door is keep hitting the button," Godec said. "When a spring lets go, the opener is suddenly trying to lift the whole weight of the door by itself, and a door that has jumped its track can drop crooked. Pushing it at that point is how one broken part ends up as bent panels and snapped cables."
The guide closes with answers to common questions, including how to tell whether a torsion spring has broken, how long an opener repair usually takes, how often a door needs maintenance, and whether commercial doors are serviced. The guide says most opener repairs take a few hours once the problem has been diagnosed on site, though timing depends on the fault and the parts involved, and that a yearly tune-up suits most doors.
"This business has run on word of mouth since 1994," Godec said. "Having the common repairs written down means a homeowner knows how I work before I show up."
